From NYPost letters page yesterday:
![]() It's been a year since the second (and, it seems, last) book in the landmark Book of Ages series hit the shelves in the States. But this fall, Japan is getting its first taste courtesy of the translated version of The Big 40. As a public service, JVG helpfully runs down the differences between the editions. With the weather, and the way things ended for the Sox this year, it seems even more appropriate than usual this time of year:
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." —A. Bartlett Giamatti, The Green Fields of the MindExcept for those years—so rare, so precious—it doesn't. There was loss this year, but no pain. And I can sit here and watch the first pitch of Game 5 of Angels-Yanks without a sharp knife to the stomach even when Schwartz emails, "I think AROD is going to have 6 RBIs tonight." You know, he probably is.
