What Choire said. Horrendous night for the Sox, but oh, that 7th inning stretch!
(Also redemptive: Soxaholix at Yankee Stadium last night: "Fuck yeah, like we're all buddies and shit … So I reply, a bit too loudly, 'I've been a Yankees fan ever since Daddy first fucked me.' The man seemed angry. He turned away.")

That time of summer again, when we spend our days reading about baseball, and our nights watching it. For your browsing pleasure, pointers to must-reading in advance of three games of Red Sox-Yankees at the Stadium: the ever-playful Yanksfan vs. Soxfan, and the ever-genius Soxaholix.

Another recent discovery: Fodor's has started an interesting travel weblog called Right This Way, written by a group of its contributors. Entries are short and sweet.

Does this space now exist for the sole purpose of flogging new blogs? (Ask yourself: did it ever do anything else?) We greet this new week with the official launch of Gothamist Arts, authored in large part by the Jen/Janelle braintrust. Huzzahs &c.

Lost in an abyss the size of midtown last week, forgot to note the newest weblog from the Rojas empire: Joystiq. Worth a visit, at least to mouse over the logo.

From Russell Shorto's The Island at the Center of the World:
The island spawned taverns and breweries with remarkable speed -- at one point in its early years, one quarter of its buildings were devoted to making or selling alcohol. The "bar scene" seems to have rivaled anything New York City could boast today (and, ironically enough, would occupy the same general downtown quadrant that accounts for much of today's nightlife.)To be young and in 1640. · The Island at the Center of the World [Amazon]

What genius at Gawker decided against sending Slower to last night's Phish concert at Coney Island's Keyspan Park? Some say biggest missed opportunity ever. In his stead, a few impressionistic glimpses:

Eff Franz Ferdinand and that secret afterparty tonight at blah blah blah. We're off to the start of Phish's farewell tour at Coney Island this eve. Apropos, Friend Ellie forwards this touching link.

![]() In the past couple of weeks, I've received text messages on my cellphone from three friends that were part of the second wave of Friendster in fall/winter 2003—in other words, friends I'd never have expected to receive text messages from. I think it's safe to say that texting has at long last jumped into the mainstream in NYC. I also received the above message from a wag who sent it via his Treo 600. Alas, he may have a point.

Apropos of this and this, we hit the opening of The Delancey last week, ourselves. Thought we were making a decent evening of it, too—My Morning Jacket concert to start, followed by a Livin' On A Prayer > Sweet Caroline pairing at The Delancey by the crazed DJ—even if The Delancey is, in point of fact, a rather horrid place. Came The Blueprint to ruin our day (as it has so many others) with a report of a secret underground club in L.A., reminding us that our special night was, at its core, profoundly hollow.

Yesterday, Jason Calacanis rolled out the newest site in his burgeoning stable, Autoblog. The site looks great and reads well, and we rev our engines in his general direction. However, we're troubled by a post on Jason's personal weblog from several days back regarding the forthcoming launch of the site. He writes, "No we didn’t partner with one of Nick's bloggers... we got a truce going right now, Nick and I." Truce? Hmmm. Our friends at Skadden have a different name for these kinds of "special" "arrangements" between "competitors."

My Aunt in Victoria, British Columbia emails: "I noticed the Phish 'retirement' announcement on your site. I was extremely surprised to see an article containing the same announcement in the entertainment section of our local Victoria newspaper this morning. Who knew?"
