Review: Hue

October 01, 2003 Has Frank Prisinzano finally arrived? His previous eateries (Frank, Supper, Lil' Frankies) are all East Village $25 and Under faves. Today, Times food critic William Grimes elevates Frank's new-ish West Village Asian eatery Hue (Charles St. @ Bleeker) to full (one star) review status in a snippy little review that focuses more on the crowd than the cuisine ("a highly desirable setting for a certain kind of person," he calls this restaurant genre). Granted, this isn't just Frank's place (his partner here, Karim Amatullah, helmed nighclub Halo), but Grimes offers the ultimate slight, not mentioning any of the principals by name. We ate at Hue a few weeks back and thought it a worthy branching out of the Frank empire. A little loud, yes, and a little overpriced, but hey, what do you expect in the West Village?

Which does beg the question, has Frank (the restaurant) departed? Emails a website-shy pal, "I don't generally participate in the idle conversation of the 'Comments' section of
your blog, but I must second the statements regarding Frank made earlier today. While I am still a fan of the food, my girlfriend and I ate there last night and found the wait staff, bartender and crowd nothing short of obnoxious. I took it to be one of those nights you have
previously described as 'Village Voice' nights. They brought the worst out of the establishment."

When did Dog Juggling become fashionable at resturants? Just try to eat with pooches flying near your head from table to table.
Obnoxious..yes.

I've worked with Karim in the past when he was with Panson at Halo. If he's at the helm, it's going to do just fine.
