Capitale Review

May 30, 2003 Our summer intern hasn't arrived at Below 14th yet, so we're running a bit behind in noting that William Grimes made it down to Capitale and gave it two stars. Our thinking is that's at least one star less than what the owners had in mind, given the extreme opulence of the place.

Amidst the Chinatown stink, the constant broo-haha surrounding capitale, which seems to always have "something" going on, or be "under construction" is bizarre, but welcomed. Personally, i couldn't imagine stepping out of an event in heeled, open toed sandals, and into a puddle of muck, typically characteristic of certain areas of grand and bowery. On the flip side, you can get some dang good fruit, fish, AND "bubble tea" (a trend i'm shocked has yet to catch on as quickly) or dumplings, down the block.

I was invited to one of the several preview dinners held prior to the opening of the restaurant. The setting...impressive. The food...okay. The desserts...gross.

Capitale does not pay their employees on time and frequently cheats them out of money on most if not every paycheck. I know---I work there!! The manager, C—, was abusive to the workers until he got shit-canned by the coke snorting owners who are also crazy and f-ed up all of the time. The asst. magare, J—, was just found drunk, passed in the kitchen witha bottle of booze. He was then fired. That place is run like CRAP! but, it is big, good looking and will last for a while I am sure....

Had to edit out a few names. Posters, let's be libel conscious! It's healthy AND delicious!
